Police investigating a series of fraud and theft offences in the Mount Isa District and are appealing to members of the public who may have been victims to come forward.
On September 2, Burketown Police intercepted an allegedly stolen white Landcruiser utility vehicle near Burke and Wills and arrested a 31-year-old man for outstanding warrants.
The man was transported to Cloncurry where the Major Organised Crime Squad Rural (MOCS Rural) and Criminal Investigation Branch, investigated property offences throughout the Gulf of Carpentaria Region, including Doomadgee, Burketown and Normanton.
The man was charged with property and fraud offences which included bringing stolen goods into Queensland, two counts of fraud and two counts of stealing. He is due to reappear at the Mount Isa Magistrates Court on October 7.
Police believe the man may have impersonated other people or used false names to commit a range of offences, with incidents reported to date including: scamming people out of cash deposits under the pretence of selling the allegedly stolen ute he was travelling in, seeking money for cattle in Mount Isa that did not exist, failure to pay for accommodation as well as a range of property offences.
Investigators are working with police from the Northern Territory as part of the investigation as it is alleged the man crossed the border into Queensland on August 30, travelling by road along the Savannah Way.
Police believe there may be more victims and appeal for anyone with information to contact police.
