Earlier: Police have made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) in relation to an incident taking place in Newtown, Tooowoomba.

Around 10.45am today Wednesday December 21 police attended a Park Street property to execute a search warrant.

Upon arrival, police began negotiations with a man, who is believed to be in the residence with one other man and is believed to be in possession of a firearm.

An emergency situation was declared just before midday, the area declared encompasses Tor Street, Park Street and Dalmany Street. Residents within the exclusion zone must remain indoors.

Police have evacuated a number of residents from Park Street and will evacuate further nearby residents if necessary.

Motorists travelling in the area must stay out of the exclusion zone while emergency services respond.

Traffic diversions are in place. There is no further information available at this time.
